Foreign Language

Requirements:

Seton Keough students must complete 2 years of foreign language study (Spanish, French, or Latin). However, many colleges and universities prefer 3-4 years of foreign language study.

The Foreign Language Department of The Seton Keough High School prepares students to be productive, engaged members of the global community. Throughout the sequence of courses, students are exposed to the language, culture, and diversity that exist in our world. Listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills are emphasized at each level of language study.

Level I (Spanish, French, and Latin)
Level I serves as an introduction to the target language and culture. Classroom instruction provides exposure to all four basic language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) with particular emphasis on conversational skills. Speaking and listening skills are reinforced through practice in the language lab.

Level II (Spanish, French, and Latin)
Students practice reading, writing, listening and speaking in the target language while they continue to learn basic grammatical structures and acquire new vocabulary. Students are exposed to the rich variety of cultures through film, music and readings. Communicative skills continue to improve through practice in the language lab.

Level III (Spanish, French, and Latin)
This elective course offers further exploration of the target language and culture. An extensive review of grammatical structures, literary readings, and discussion and analysis are part of the course. Topics in vocabulary and culture offer students the opportunity for communicative proficiency. Explicit attention is paid to the consistent development of good pronunciation and conversation skills.

Level IV (Spanish and French)
This elective course focuses on conversation and culture more than on complex language structures. It emphasizes a review of language structures necessary for effective comprehension and production of the target language. Highlights of the course include improvement of pronunciation for communication, increased focus on culture, and exposure to short stories, essays and feature films.

Level V (Spanish and French)
Designed for the advanced student, this course is intended for those students with a strong grasp of the language who wish to continue their language study. It presents an intensified study of grammar, advanced vocabulary, writing and conversation. Students are exposed to the literature, history and culture of the target language through the reading of a wide range of authentic materials.
