Mathematics

Requirements:

Seton Keough students must complete three credits in mathematics, typically Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II.

The Mathematics Department at Seton Keough provides rigorous coursework that develops critical thinkers who are able to analyze sophisticated concepts in mathematics and are prepared for their studies in college and their future lives. Seton Keough welcomes students from diverse backgrounds and is therefore prepared to offer courses that challenge the brightest students and provide coursework for students who are more challenged in math.

Ninth Grade:
Students in grade 9 typically take Alegbra I or Geometry based upon their coursework in middle school and scores on the High School Placement Test (HSPT). Introductory, or honors placement is dependent upon the student’s score on the Seton Keough Mathematics Placement Test, which is administered in the spring.

Tenth Grade:
Students in grade 10 take Geometry or Algebra II. Introductory or honors placement is dependent upon the students’s completion of coursework in grade 9.

Eleventh Grade:
Students in grade 11 take Algebra II, Advanced Algebra, Pre-Calculus, or AP Calculus. Introductory, honors, or AP placement is dependent upon the students’s completion of coursework in grade 10.

Twelfth Grade:
Students in grade 12 take Advanced Algebra, Pre-Calculus, AP Calculus, or AP Calculus BC. Honors or AP placement is dependent upon the students’s completion of coursework in grade 11.

* Students who enrolled in AP classes are required to take the AP Exam administered by the College Board. An additional fee is required.

Clubs and Extracurricular Activities:

Mathematics Honor Society: The Math Honor Society recognizes students who have demonstrated outstanding mathematical achievement as well as overall academic excellence. Members exemplify personal integrity by using their mathematical knowledge for the good of society and contribute to the school's community through service.

Moody Challenge Club is moderated by the Mathematics Department. Moody’s Mega Math Challenge is an applied mathematics competition for high school students. Winners receive scholarships for continuing education. A partnership of The Moody’s Foundation and SIAM, the competition spotlights applied mathematics as a powerful problem-solving tool, a vital contributor to advances in an increasingly technical society, and a viable and exciting profession.

Questions and Answers about the Mathematics Curriculum at Seton Keough:

  1. How is a student’s placement in Math determined?
    The Mathematics Department looks at your daughter’s grades from seventh and eighth grade, scores on the High School Placement Test (HSPT), and outcome from the Seton Keough Mathematics placement test, administered in the spring of her eighth grade year.

  2. If a student takes Algebra I in eighth grade and passes the placement test what should she take her freshman year?
    Geometry. If your daughter has taken both Algebra I and Geometry in middle school she should take Algebra II as a freshman.

  3. What opportunities exist for additional math help for students?
    The Mathematics teachers in the Department assist students who are in need of extra help. Students arrange for extra help with teachers early in the morning, after school, or at a mutually convenient time of the day.
