Academic Excellence

Faculty
A place of faith, excellence, and inclusion, Seton Keough’s faculty of over 45 teachers reflects the mission and values of the school. Over 80 percent hold advanced degrees. The student to faculty ratio is 12:1.

Even more special than their academic credentials is the communal environment in which they work. Seton Keough teachers and students have respect for one another and ease in how they relate, which nurtures an environment where students feel confident and comfortable to ask questions and express their opinions.

Seton Keough faculty enhances student growth through interactive classes and activities. Small classes, group projects, and individual attention help students achieve academic goals and nurture personal growth. The faculty encourages students to be thinking, independent young women who will grow to be leaders.

The faculty has a diverse makeup of religious, lay teachers, men, women, and persons of different faiths. One special aspect of Catholic education is the opportunity for students to be taught by members of a religious order. Seton Keough has Sisters from five different orders, a Priest Chaplain, and a candidate for the Permanent Diaconate in the Archdiocese of Washington, D.C. Each student has a faculty advisor with whom she meets throughout the school year. In addition to their teaching duties faculty members volunteer for numerous extra-curricular activities including coaching, drama, clubs, chaperoning dances, and community service projects.

College Prep
Seton Keough strives to provide a first-rate, college-preparatory education to all of its students.
The school provides different learning levels including Advanced Placement (AP) and Honors courses that challenge students who have superior academic backgrounds, excellent work-study habits, and who are willing to accept a more rigorous work regimen. However, the benchmark of Seton Keough’s academic approach is to reach out to students on their own learning level. Dr. Curtis Turner, principal, says “We believe that every student learns differently and we are here to help each one succeed.” Each student is valued for her individual talents and experiences.

FOCUS Program
The FOCUS Program is designed for students who score lower on the high school placement test and have experienced academic difficulties in the past. These difficulties may indicate reading, written language, and/or math deficits. The students are identified and may be placed in specific core academic classes designed as preparation for college-prep classes. FOCUS students are also placed in study skills classes, which include support in the academic classes, organizational/study skills, and specific remediation in math, written language, and reading. Students in the FOCUS program also participate in all of the required elective classes. The FOCUS program incorporates a mandatory summer review session in English and math. The FOCUS Director, who maintains frequent communication with parents and teachers, assesses student progress throughout the year. The goal of the FOCUS program is to help students improve their academic skills with a “focus” on attending college.

Marillac Services
Marillac is a college-preparatory program designed for the success of young women with learning differences. Marillac is an inclusion model where students with documented differences are integrated into the regular high school curriculum, activities, and faith life. The cornerstone of Marillac services is the educational support of the Study Skills Classes, which includes organizational skills, reading/writing remediation, and support in the content areas. The goal of the Study Skills Class is to teach student self-advocacy, an understanding of strengths and weaknesses, and the ability to communicate specific learning needs to faculty and staff. Our staff commitment to our students is the key to the success of our program. Marillac Services involve the use of an inclusion model that integrates students and staff at every level. A 504 Plan is formulated for each student. In addition, extensive monitoring of progress in the content areas, and a specific Study Skills curriculum are all part of a philosophy, which includes accepting students with diverse learning needs. Our Admissions Policy is to accept a limited number of students that qualify for these services in order to maintain a quality, individualized approach. For more information about the Marillac Program, contact the Office of Admissions.

Technology
Seton Keough boasts state-of-the-art computer systems. A school-wide network, with high-speed Internet, allows students to conduct online research and prepare assignments efficiently. Students store their files on the school’s server, and can access their work from any computer in the building. Computers are distributed throughout the school. Along with classroom computers, Seton Keough has implemented a system of small, “mini-labs.” These mini-labs each have eight computers and a network laser printer, and are located in departmental resource centers and the library. The Computer Department also has 48 computers available to students, which complement the school’s distributed systems. This provides all students easy access to computers. The Computer Department offerings include productivity applications, web research and site design, desktop publishing, and honors-level programming.
