Archbishop Keough
Melanie Meile Garmon K’79
Melanie has just started her own business in Glastonbury, CT this past year. The company, PrintWise, LLC, does printing, graphic and website design for clients in the CT/NY/MA area. She is married and has two children, a 14 year old son and an 11 year old daughter.
Linda Lohrfink and Alyssa Bartolini Smith K ’84
Alyssa sent in the following story of friendship and tradition founded at Archbishop Keough High School:
Twenty-eight years ago, a tradition started for two freshmen Archbishop Keough students; it was an event known as the Father-Daughter Dinner Dance. The 1981 event was the 6th annual Father-Daughter Dinner Dance for AKHS, but the first of many for Linda Lohrfink and Alyssa (Bartolini) Smith.
The announcement for the Father-Daughter Dinner Dance came in early 1981. While we had never met before September of 1980, we had realized that we were destined to become best friends and we had a lot in common. We were placed into the same classes, same sections…and then signed up for Lettering with Sister Barbara at the same time. We even found out that our fathers knew each other from work! So, when the time came to buy tickets to the Annual Father-Daughter Dinner Dance, we decided to go. That freshman year was just the beginning of a tradition for us. We attended the Father-Daughter Dinner Dance each year. It was held at Martin’s Champagne Room on Patapsco Avenue and brought us evenings of food and music.
After graduation, we both attended UMBC. We’d meet for breakfast in the mornings and lunches once a week. We’d head off to our respective classes. By this time, we had decided on different majors but knew we could carve time out to hang around.
Once winter was upon us in 1985, we came up with the idea of taking our dads out to dinner. They had treated us to the previous Father-Daughter Dinner Dances and we thought we’d take them out for a change. That was the first of many. We have since celebrated 24 annual, post-Keough Father-Daughter Dinners (no dancing!) to make a total of 28 years!
We’ve chosen restaurants from downtown Baltimore, to Howard County, Carroll County and Frederick County. We’ve enjoyed many good meals together and the fathers still enjoy catching up. They’ve both since retired, we’ve gotten married and had children although spouses and children are NOT invited. It’s a night we look forward to each year and a tradition that was started long ago. We recently shared our twenty-eighth Father-Daughter Dinner this past April!
