An Open Letter to Students and Faculty
from the Seton Keough Campus Ministry Office:
"You are the light of the world. . . Your light must shine before all." (Mt 5:14.16)
Pope John Paul II once challenged young people: “Ask yourselves: Do I believe these words of Jesus in the Gospel? Jesus is calling you the light of the world. He is asking you to let your light shine before others. . . . Are you ready for this?
‘When you were little, were you sometimes afraid of the dark? Today you are no longer children. . . . you are teenagers and young adults. But already you realize that there is another kind of darkness in the world: the darkness of doubt and uncertainty. . . . Sometimes the world itself seems filled with darkness. The darkness of children who go hungry and even die. The darkness of homeless people who lack work and proper medical care. The darkness of violence . . . .
“But you believe in the light . . . . Do not listen to those who encourage you to lie, to shirk responsibility, to put yourselves first. . . . . Do not be taken in by false values and deceptive slogans, especially about your freedom. . . . Freedom is not the ability to do anything we want, whenever we want. Rather, freedom is the ability to live responsibly the truth of our relationship with God and with one another. Remember what Jesus said: "you will know the truth and the truth will set you free" (John 8:32).”
Campus Ministry at Seton Keough is here to help kindle the fire of Christ in our community so that our school and students will be beacons of light for a sometimes dark and troubled world.
How can Campus Ministry you? We endeavor to do so in a number of ways:
- Liturgical Celebrations and Prayer Services: Vibrant Mass celebrations and spirit-filled prayer services bring us in touch with our God. We invite all those interested in serving as liturgical ministers as lectors, readers, Eucharistic Ministers, music ministers, etc. or in planning our celebrations, to join our campus “Worship Team” and let your light shine!
- Class Retreats: Traditionally, students go on retreats in the fall, where the focus is on sharing fun and fellowship, building community, and stoking the flames of our faith.
- Service and Advocacy: We are planning a variety of social justice activities to serve the poor and needy in our community as Christ calls us to do for so many struggle in the darkness of poverty and/or loneliness. All are welcome to serve.
- Spiritual Guidance/Pastoral Care: Please seek us out!
Please let us know how Campus Ministry can best serve your needs and/or the needs of our school community so that we can better kindle Christ’s fire here! Please keep us in your prayers, as you are in ours.
Blessings in Christ,
